The entrance room to a nightclub called Luxy. Clubbing in Taipei was a very interesting experience. The venue itself was very pretty - great decorations/art, good lighting, decent sound system. It was about $20 USD to get in, but your ticket was worth 2 free drinks. Drinks were priced about the same there as they were in the US. There were also ins-and-outs, which was nice (more detail on this later).

There were 3 music areas. The first floor side room (which you'll see in the next picture) was hosting a gig called Bass Control. Tech house, tribal/trance, and progressive music in there... The loungy area upstairs had techno early on, then electro house later. Main room had top 40/hip-hop all night.

I bounced back and forth between the 3 areas, trying to get a feel for different vibes throughout the night. The MC in the main room was hilarious - egging people on to get drunk. He actually had a fifth of vodka and was jumping around pouring it into random people's cups.

For about the first 2 hours I was the only one in the house room dancing... and I noticed that after dancing for a few tunes and then stopping to get a drink, people would clap. Like, applause for dancing. I thought it might have been just a few people but this happened multiple times. Dance for a little bit, stop, hear some groups of people clap. Not sure I've ever experienced that before.

While I was dancing, I came across a couple from America - Canadian/US couple. The guy, named Tom, asked if I wanted a drink, and I said sure... and he started to head for the exit! He explained to me that all the foreigners would come into the club to party, but leave and go to a nearby 7-11 to buy beer, drink it outside the 7-11, then go back into the club. 7-11's are pretty much everywhere in Taipei and their beers are much cheaper than club drinks, so this method of getting drunk really seemed to work well. Outside the 7-11, a bunch of foreigners (mostly English teachers) would hang out in large clusters (8+ people)...

Funny thing about this Tom guy - it turned out that he used to rock climb with the current wife of someone I interned with in 2006 - small world...
