A 5-hit hitting spree! That doesn't happen everyday. He ripped Seattle pitching apart at McAfee Coliseum. He wrote his name in the record books, finishing up his special day 5-5. But the Mariners spoiled his party by winning the game 11-6.
The Oakland center fielder confessed, "I would have much preferred getting a couple of hits and winning the game to this. It's hard to enjoy anything when you lose."
His skipper said, "It's a shame that we couldn't have won the game. A guy gets a once-in-a-lifetime game and can't really enjoy it."
But he was upbeat enough to talk about his basic theory of hitting. "I'm usually a first ball hitter," Cespedes told SION reporters in the postgame press conference. "I think pitchers think batters are going to let the first one go by. I never do. I've always found that it's better to pull the trigger early in the count. Pitchers get real nasty when they get ahead of you, so I try to avoid that."
Y. Cespedes singled in the 1st, hit a two-run single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI double in the 9th.
This season Cespedes is batting .317 with 31 home runs. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 87-75, .537 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 44-37, .543 PCT | | Record on the road | 43-38, .531 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 8-13, .381 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 17-23, .425 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 34-35, .493 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 53-40, .570 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 3-7, .300 PCT | | Record in April | 9-13, .409 PCT | | Record in May | 11-17, .393 PCT | | Record in June | 19-7, .731 PCT | | Record in July | 16-11, .593 PCT | | Record in August | 16-11, .593 PCT | | Record in September | 14-13, .519 PCT | | Record in October | 2-3, .400 PCT |
