Only a handful of players will do that. Get 5 hits in a game and you get your moment of glory...your 5 minutes of fame...you get your name in the record book. Win or lose you get listed.
Will Ross got his name in the record book, but the Herkimer Cobras picked up the win, topping the Akron Henchmen 5-4.
"Sure, I would have much preferred to win the game, but that's not how it came out. In baseball you win some, lose some and some get rained out," the Akron first baseman expressed his feelings during the postgame press conference.
He certainly did his part today, pounding out hit after hit.
Later in the clubhouse Ross spoke further about his big game, "To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax. I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I must admit, I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this was a special once-in-a-lifetime day. On the last hit, I was ready to swing at anything close, I was that excited. That's why my third base coach called time and told me, 'Calm down and wait for a good pitch.' That got me back on track and I nailed the first one in the strike zone."
On his record-setting day Ross delivered 5 hits in 5 at-bats, a day that will be good scrapbook material.
W. Ross singled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
This season in 57 games, Ross has hit at a .398 clip with 49 hits, 4 home runs, 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored. | | Saturday, July 19th, 2025: Outstanding Pitcher Award Goes to Jones This season Edwin Jones of Herkimer was the #1 pitcher according to SION sportswriters and analysts. His fine 9-1 won-lost mark and 2.80 had a big influence in the voting and the Herkimer hurler was named the 2025 Sub League 2 Outstanding Pitcher Award winner.
In 96.1 innings of work and 15 starts, the Cobras star struck out 79 while giving up 85 hits and 22 walks. He held opposing batters to a .227 average.
This weekend Jones will be honored by the SION Baseball Writers Association at its annual awards dinner. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 56-64, .467 PCT | | Position in Division | 5th, 17.0 GB | | Record at home | 33-27, .550 PCT | | Record on the road | 23-37, .383 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 18-12, .600 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 16-12, .571 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 40-52, .435 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 15-13, .536 PCT | | Record in May | 13-16, .448 PCT | | Record in June | 13-12, .520 PCT | | Record in July | 11-18, .379 PCT | | Record in August | 4-5, .444 PCT |
